The Comorbid Conditions of TMD, OSA, and CLASS II OCCLUSION

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines comorbidity as “more than one disease or condition is present at the same time in the same person.” Conditions described as comorbidities are often chronic or long-term conditions. Other names to describe comorbid conditions are co-existing or co-occurring conditions and sometimes also “multimorbidity” or “multiple chronic conditions.” In dentistry, there are three distinct conditions TMD, OSA, and Class II malocclusion, which share many similar signs and symptoms and can co-exist in the same person at the same time. The treatment for these three conditions frequently involves a therapeutic plan with the goal of moving the mandible downward and forward.

The treatment process must carefully balance the TM joints complex, the oral-facial muscles, and the tongue muscles. Ideally, treatment will be beneficial to these patients when all three conditions are evaluated and treated simultaneously. However, complications can arise if only one condition is treated and the other two ignored.

The goal of this two day seminar is to teach the signs, symptoms, and treatment of those comorbid conditions TMD, OSA, and Class II malocclusion successfully.
